Oh What a Night

Great ready for a story. The night started by with me staying up late to pick up a friend from the airport. His plane was delayed, so by the time I got home and in bed, it was 1 am. No big deal - I don't have to work the next day - 5 or 6 hours is plenty of sleep.

But it was not to be.... The phone rang at 3 am. I answered it while half asleep. A man was on the other line and told me this weird story I didn't understand and I said, "What?" Now that I am more awake, I at least hear his story this time. He's with the county sheriff's office. He found a cordless phone handset at a street corner nearby and he thinks it's ours. Can I please tell him where I live so he can bring it to me?

Um - what? I said I didn't feel comfortable giving him that information. By this time, Jon was up and asking who was on the phone. He tells me not to say anything and just hang up. I turned on the light and looked at the caller ID. It had a wireless number listed. (What did I expect it to say - Police?) So, the guy started his story over again, saying he doesn't mean to frighten me. He's on patrol and found this phone so he drove around the neighborhood until he got a signal on the phone. He used the phone to call his cell phone and my number came up, so he really thinks it's my phone and he just wants to bring it back to me and he thinks I live on Dewberry. He then told me exactly where he was at and asked that I go look out my window to verify that he is indeed in a police car. He was being very polite this whole time.

So, I put the phone down, and head out to look out the window, but I'm just too chicken, so I make Jon go do it - he doesn't see anything. I suggest to him that we page our handsets to see if both of them are in the house, but, again, I'm too chicken to go downstairs, so I make him do it. We only hear one handset ring. I finally go back to the phone and tell the so-called cop we didn't see a car, and he says the phone he has just beeped. Meanwhile, Jon's still saying to not tell him anything, so I hand the phone over to him. Then I went to check the window. I see a car where he told me he would be, but it's too far away to tell if it's a cop car. I go back to tell Jon, but I guess the guy hung up or something.

The phone rings again and we debate whether or not to answer it. We don't, but the guy leaves a message. It states his name again and that he just wants to give us our phone back and he leaves his cell number to call him. Jon has gotten dressed by this point and heads back downstairs to try paging our handsets again. This whole thing just doesn't make sense. Especially at 3 am.

Then I remember... Earlier in the day, I was on the phone right before Jon and I left to go for a walk. I remember walking out of the house while still on the phone. After I hung up, I put the phone on the back bumper of our truck. Where I promptly forgot about it. It was still there when I left at midnight to go to the airport. So now I feel a lot better about the situation because I know how our phone found it's way to this other street. Although, I am surprised the phone stayed on the truck for as long as it did.

By this time, Jon has looked out the window again and he sees it is indeed a cop car and it's just a few houses down from us. He decides to go outside. Just then, the phone rings again. It's the cop. I tell him my husband is outside. They meet up and Jon gets the phone back. Jon must have apologized or something, because I hear the cop say he totally understands and he would have just left it on our porch, but he didn't know which house it belonged to. Poor guy was just trying to do something nice and Jon and I made it difficult for him because we thought we was some kind of freak stalker or something.

SO - we're all fine and we head off to bed. Too bad I can't fall asleep. My mind was just racing with all kinds of stuff. Then Lexi decides to wake up at 4 am. We try and try to get her to go back to sleep in her crib, but she will have none of it. Finally Jon takes her downstairs at 4:30 to sleep with her in our recliner. I try to go to sleep... the last time I looked at the clock it was almost 5 am. I got almost a good hour of sleep when Jon's alarm went off at 6 am. I went downstairs to wake him up and I go back to sleep with Lexi in the chair. Until she decides 6:30 is the perfect time to get up. All in all, I think I got about 3 hours of sleep. Needless to say, I'm a tired girl today.

What did I learn from all of this? Don't ever take the phone out of the house, and if you do, don't set it down on a vehicle. AND - There are still good people in the world.

Even at 3 am.

I had a night like that last night too! Evan woke up at 12:30 and decided he was up - everytime I'd put hime back in his crib he'd crawl right out. He finally went to sleep at 4:00. So I guess it's a Dr. Pepper day, huh?

Definitely. Then again - I think just about every day is really a DP day for me...

I'm glad it worked out in the end, but seriously, what cop is calling back multiple times at 3am? Couldn't his good deed wait until the morning shift was on duty? That would have really weirded me out!

And, btw, Jack decided to wake up and fuss every hour from 12:30-5:30am this morning, so I feel your pain.

I would have been totally freaked out at someone calling at that time of day. It's just weird, even if you are being nice.
BTW~ I have left our phone in wierd places too. Most recently I lost it in the fridge!

I'm with Teresa - good deeds can take place at a DECENT hour! Of course, he had no idea what the story was - it could have been
"foul play" that landed the phone on the street for all he knew!

Oh, & don't feel bad about the phone. I have misplaced/destroyed many cordless phones. I have even dropped one in the washing machine! Yup, didn't find it until it had gone through the dryer!

Your story is long but funny. Move to Arizona, there are plenty of good people here!

Yes, the cop was apparetnly trying to be nice, but you guys did do the right thing. Then again I do have one of those crazy imaginations that runs away with me sometimes, but it almost sounds like a movie premise-mass murdering handset thief.
